Amy Millar: Confident Canterer

Hey readers,

Clip Clop, Clip Clop! Can you communicate with a half ton animal that doesn’t speak your language? Amy Millar can! Amy Millar is someone that I think is a successful learner. She is a Canadian Olympian who competes in an event called show jumping. She is the daughter of Ian Millar who is also a Canadian Olympian.  I haven’t seen her competing in real life, but I did watch her on T.V at the Rio Olympics in 2016. She is from Perth,Ontario, and she rides a horse named Heros.

One of the successful learner traits that I think she uses when she is competing is confidence. She shows calm and collected behavior when she is in the riding ring. She is always positive and proud of herself and her horse, no matter how good or bad they do.

Amy is also enthusiastic about riding and performing. She is always encouraging people on the Canadian team as well as people from around the world. When she is training for competitions she is coached by someone. She always has an open mind about what her coach says.

She also shows risk taking. I have noticed that she is a big risk taker. She has the guts to go in front of a huge panel of judges, and on top of that,a crowd of about 300-400 people (well,at the Olympics). Jumping that high is challenging. You really have to know what your doing. If you fall off from that height there is a very high change of breaking some bones.

I think that Heros, Amy’s horse, is compassionate and kind. He shows love to Amy. He is also collaborative because he has to understand a human that doesn’t speak fluent horse. He has to be patience because he has to travel the world a lot! Imagine not knowing where you are going and having to just load onto a plane. That must be pretty scary.

I think that Amy Millar is a great role model for anyoneeven if you don’t like horses. One day I would really like to meet her! Have you ever been taught successful learner traits? What successful learner trait most describes you?

Have a wonderful day,

Volleyball

2017 WVB | UofA vs TWU

Sangudo via Compfight

Hey readers,

I really enjoy volleyball and I’m on the girls volleyball team! Yesterday we had our first game of the season. We one won all three games (we think, no one was really keeping score). I was on the volleyball team last year and I had lots of fun so I signed  up again!

I’m really bad at spiking, but I’m trying to get better. I can bump and set really well and I’m also good at tipping the ball over the net. Volleyball knee pads are so helpful! They can help you dig the ball back up from the ground by falling on your knees or they can help you make a dive for the ball.

On practice day we get to practice our skills and do drills but we also get to play a quick scrimmage V.S the guys team because we share the gym with them for practice. Some times sometimes we do drills with them but most of the time we just practice with our team.

This year we have a way smaller team. Loads of the grade 7s from last year are now at high school and unable to play on our team. But there are quite a few people that were on the team last year that decided to join again. I think that gives the team a bit of an advantage because we have previous experience!

YAY today is a game day! I’m so excited to play against another school. This time we are playing one big game instead of 3 little games. Also we aren’t hosting the game.

Do you play any sports?

Have a wonderful day,

Horse Riding

Horseback Riding in Nosara, Costa Rica Chris Goldberg via Compfight

Hey readers,

I love horse riding! It’s one of my favourite things to do! Let me tell you a bit about horse riding.

I ride a horse named Sage shes a chestnut mare (in non-horsey words , she’s a brown female horse). She is a very tiny pony with a big attitude! If she doesn’t get what she wants she will get pretty mad. Her show name is Sugar and Spice Sage.

Sometimes I ride a horse named Cassie. She is also very sweet but she loves to jump really big! She is in her 20’s but still very active. Sometimes when we are jumping small she will over jump it. By over jumping it I mean she will jump way bigger than she needs to. But she is still fun to canter and trot on!  I love cantering! It’s one of my absolute favourite things to to in horse riding… besides jumping.

I have tried barrel racing once but I didn’t like as much as jumping. I have never really been a big fan of Western style riding. Jumping involves memorizing courses, body control and most important, trying to communicate with a half ton animal that doesn’t speak your language.

Something that I’m not quite excited for is November. At my barn we do this thing called no stirrup November 🙁 Absolutely everything is done with out stirrups. Jumping, posting, trot, and canter. I don’t like it because after the lesson it feels like you have done like 5000 sit ups and 100 squats. It involves lots of core strength.

I have most of my own stuff for riding, the only thing that I need to borrow from the barn is a bridle,  girth and a horse blanket.

Have you ever tried horse riding? Did you like it?

Have a wonderful day,

Comox Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Comox Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Hello readers,

My name is Kayley and I am very excited to start blogging for the second year in a row, I got Ms.Smith again. I am from the Comox Valley and I am in Ms. Smith’s class of grade 6 and 7.

I am a big fan of horse riding and I have been riding for 5 1/2 years as of now. My favourite professional horseback rider is Ian Miller who is a Canadian Olympian. I ride a horse named Sage shes super nice!

I am also very  interested in volleyball which is why I signed up for the school’s volleyball team again. I really like sports in case  you can’t tell…

But I also like animals. I have a dog named Dasher (as in the reindeer) and yes, if you think that is a weird name it’s because I was five when I named him and and he was my Christmas present. In the summer for the past few years I have volunteered at a petting zoo. I won volunteer of the year twice now.My favourite animal is the calf or the pony shes super sweet. I am a foster parent to kittens. We look after them until they are ready to go to a real home.

I really like playing games with my friends outside, going to the beach and swimming in the rivers. I love hanging out at a friends farm! They have huge pigs that are bigger that the average sized couch. One of the things that I have built a hobbie for is looking for river glass at the river.

I also love traveling! I have traveled to New Zeland, Ontario, California and lots of places in the U.S! One day I would love to Go to Italy. It looks very beautiful.

Do you have a hobbie? Hope you have a great day,

Camp Lessons

SWIIISSHHH I fly through the air! I had just finished the Leap of Faith at Tribune Bay. The classes from division 12 and  13 were at camp. The camp that every kid at Brooklyn Elementary is excited for. The camp with the most delicious food that could ever be tasted by the human mouths.
When people were kind to me at camp I felt very motivated to try something new and being kind helped encourage others to challenge themselves. If you were kind to your leader they would let you try more things . I feel like if you can be kind and caring you will build more trust with your leader. One situation that happened in my day group was that someone was unkind when doing the team building activities. That left an affect on that person which made them feel left out of the group. Another situation that happened was that someone was on the rock climbing wall and she felt like they couldn’t go any further but the whole group cheered her on to encourage her to go further.  Guess What! It worked she climbed further and further till she reached the top. Kindness really does help every one feel good about them selves and others.

On most of the climbing activities you needed to remember that all of the equipment was safe and secure. When the pole started to wiggle once you got further up the Leap of Faith you had to remember that it was perfectly safe. One of the hardest parts of all the activities was to remember that it is all in your head. For example: Remembering that you are in a harness, Telling your self that you won’t fall in the water when kayaking and last but not least remembering that your team is there for you when you are scared. Something that helped me was thinking why am I scared (because I am someone who is afraid of heights)Then when I was scared I could think about why they would they send kids to a camp that was unsafe and dangerous? After that it struck my brain! Everything is all in your head.
This is something that I would tell people that are going to camp BE PREPARED I was a bit silly and forgot to see what the weather was like. So I didn’t put on sunscreen. Once we got down to the beach I realized how hot it was. This left me with and issue… I got a really bad sun burn. It was one of those ones that sting to touch. This one has nothing to do with the activities that we did but it is still very important, it’s about sleeping. Bringing an  extra blanket was a really good idea because it doesn’t get a little chilly at night. Also bringing a warm pair of P.J’s was good. Bringing a watch is a GREAT idea. There’s was one person in our cabin with a watch so we hadn’t to keep asking her what time it is. It wouldn’t have been better it all of us had just brought our own watches. It was helpful for when we needed to see what time there wasn’t until breakfast. Over all watches would have been a good thing to pack

I would definitely recommend going to Tribune Bay. Always remember to not be afraid to try new thing .I think that there are some great lessons to learn at camp. Weather you taught your self them, another classmate or someone working at camp they were all very valuable. Do you think that people will remember these lessons from camp until they are adults?

Have a wonderful day,

Geo-Bunnies!

Hey bloggers,

We did a project in math called Geo-bunny! This was our goal: Queen Smith was looking for new bunny’s to join her bunny tribe. So we had to create a bunny out of geometric shapes, find the perimeter  & area of the shapes and come up with what is called a bunny bio ( a story for your bunny). You had to present your bunny to the class and Queen Smith so you could try to convince the queen to except the bunny into the bunny tribe! You got a book called your bunny booklet to write down how you got the answer to what the perimeter and area was. You had to write down the angles and the sum of the angles. You named what shape it was and if it was a triangle what type of triangle.         Here is my Story:

My bunny is named John! John is a trained astronaut that has been flying since he was a kid. He can fly to the moon to get chocolate for every one. If you have a good taste in chocolate then you defiantly know that the best chocolate comes from the moon. He can do that for you…. but only if you except him into your bunny tribe. His one weakness is that if he eats a carrot he can die! So you need to make sure that he is on his all chocolate no carrot diet. John was recently in a antecedent with his space mobile that is why he is a bit of ruff shape . If you look at the background you can see his space mobile.

I really enjoyed doing this project with the class! One struggle for me was getting the hang of area for compound shapes. Another struggle was trying to remember the formulas for each shape.

Have you done Perimeter and area?

My Trip to Victoria

Cherry Esplanade Keith Carver via Compfight

Hello readers,

This spring break I went to a place called Victoria! Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and it is almost at the very bottom of Vancouver Island. I went with one of my friends and my Dad. This is our day that we spent there!

On our way there we stopped in at this really amazing pit stop. It had a river running  through it and it had trees that 5 kids could barley rap their arms around it! It felt like you were in a huge rain forest with birds flying everywhere.

One of the first things that we did when we got to Victoria was visit China town! In China town there is a place called Fan Tan alley and in Fan Tan alley there is a store called The Never Ending Store. By the name of the store you can probably guess what it is like! It is one really long store that feels like it never ends. I didn’t buy any thing because I was too distracted by how big the store was! After that we visited a store called… I don’t actually remember what it was called but it had lots of touristy kind of stuff. My friend got a pair of trainer chop sticks. Trainer chop sticks have a little character at the top of them that holds both chop sticks together to make it easier to use. I bought one of my favourite foods Pockys. If you have never had a pocky you need to try one! It is a bread stick that is dipped in chocolate of your choice. There are to many flavors to list.

After being tourists and eating dinner at this really delicious place we chilled out in our hotel room for a bit.We stayed in a hotel the was right by the Victoria’s legislature. The legislature is on of my favourite things about Victoria! At night time it has lights that go all the way around the building. I wonder how many lights there are in total? Because this building is huge and when I say huge I mean HUGE. After sitting down in our hotel room and goofing around we got really bored so me and my friend sprinted down to the pool. We got out of the pool at 10:00 pm and we went out of our hotel in our P.J’s to go look at the lights on the legislature and run around. It looked like a place were unicorns and magical things live because it was so pretty!Doing that got a lot of energy out so we went back to our hotel. (We had so much energy we could have run around that building at least 10 times)

In the morning we woke up and had breakfast(it was sooooooooooooooo good) We had pancakes and bacon!! I love bacon it’s delicious. We didn’t know what to do because we had to check out if our hotel in 10 minuets so the worst idea struck us! My friend and I broke out into a pillow fight! The pillows went flying and we were bouncing from bed to bed! Then BANG!*!* Her mouth hit me head and now I have a very little indent on my forehead from her tooth. We checked out of our hotel room and started our drive back home. On our way back we stopped in at a mall in Nanimo and looked around a bit but other than that we didn’t do much else after that and was the end of my trip!

Have you ever heard about Victoria? Have you ever had a pocky?

Hope you enjoyed my blog post about my spring break trip!

Have a wonderful day,
